Nightfall

Today is the first challenge for the Campaign over at Rach Writes. The challenge is to write something in 200 words or less starting with the line "Shadows crept across the wall." I chose to write a poem, as that is my first love in writing, and the genre I am most comfortable in. According to MS Word, it is 83 words (I usually write much shorter than required). It is written in trochaic tetrameter, if anyone cares. ;)

Nightfall

Shadows crept across the wall;
Anna watched the darkness fall.
Nothing could defend the light;
Nothing could stave off the night.
Yet she sat and watched the sky,
Watched the clouds drift slowly by
While the sun sank in the west
And the world went to its rest,
For she loved this time of day:
Nature’s colours turning grey,
People slowing down to sleep,
Praying God their souls to keep;
Setting sun may seem an end,
But she calls the night a friend.

  8. Love poetry, I wish I could string prose like that. So jealous, but very much enjoyed reading it.

  9. Pretty good! I think the meter's off in a few places, but whatever, right? It's beautiful imagery and tone, too! Loved lines 10-12 particularly. =)

  25. I'm really not a poetry person but this is the second poem I've really liked in this Challenge.

    Your entry has been shortlisted and will move on to round 2 of the competition. :) There will be a semi-final (round 3) and a final (round 4).

  26. Esther, like Clarie, I'm not really a poetry person, but this was beautiful. Congratulations! You've been shortlisted as one of entries to move on to the semi-finals. There will be only one more stage beyond this one...the finals. And everyone achieving that level of the competition is going to get a prize of some kind.
    Good luck!

  30. Very well written Esther, and it tells a lovely story! I don't see much poetry in the Challenges, so it's always fun to read (and kudos for how much effort it takes to meet the trochaic tetrameter requirements!)

    I've awarded you Eighth Place overall in the Judging Round! A huge congrats to you, and don't forget to pop by my blog to see the prizes you've won :)

    Hugs,

    Rach
